The Cowgirls didn’t shoot the lights out in California, but they got things done in other ways…
San Diego, Calif. —
Dominique Sisk scored 18 points and grabbed four rebounds to help lead
Wyoming
to a 55-44 victory over
San Diego State
Wednesday night.
The Cowgirls (21-4 overall, 9-3 in the MWC) built a double-digit lead in the first half and never trailed in the second. They out-rebounded the Aztecs 44-25 in the game, making up for a sub-par shooting performance (16-of-48) with physical play in the paint.
“I thought rebounding and second-chance points were a big part of the game,” said head coach Joe Legerski. “We had 12 offensive rebounds and limited San Diego State to three. We were active on the glass.”
Aubrey Vandiver scored 15 points for the Cowgirls, and Justyna Podziemska added 12.
San Diego State (13-11 overall, 4-8 in MWC) was led by Quenese Davis with 19 points followed by Allison Duffy with 10.
The Cowgirls built a 16-10 lead midway through the first half. A Davis bucket cut the advantage to four, but Wyoming responded with a 9-0 run to go up 25-12 with just less than three minutes remaining. The teams traded baskets the remainder of the way, and Wyoming took a 27-18 lead into the break.
The Cowgirls extended their lead to 15 points in the second half. SDSU stayed behind by double figures for most of the period as Wyoming coasted to the win.
Legerski credited his team’s ability to go away from its bread and butter—the 3-point shot—in order to adapt to the Aztecs’ defense.
“We were able to get to the free throw line (tonight),” he said. “It’s difficult with all of the pressure San Diego State puts on you to shoot from outside, but we were able to penetrate to the basket.”
The Cowgirls will close out the week against the
UNLV
Lady Rebels, on Saturday, February 23. The game is set to tip off at 8 p.m. Mountain Time.
